Planning a trip to Rome is exciting—and just a little overwhelming. With centuries of history packed into every cobblestone and so much to see, it helps to plan ahead. Before you pack your bags and book your flights, here are some insider tips to make your Roman holiday smooth and unforgettable. We’ve gathered some tips and tricks to make your journey stress-free and memorable.

✈️ Flights to Rome

  • Book flights at least 2-3 months in advance for the best deals.
  • Rome has two major airports: Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA).
  • Fiumicino is better for international flights; Ciampino mainly handles budget airlines.
  • How to get from the airports to the city

    From Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo da Vinci – FCO):
    • The easiest way into Rome from Fiumicino is the Leonardo Express train, which gets you straight to Termini Station in about 32 minutes. Trains leave every 15–30 minutes, and you can just buy a ticket at the station.
    • Prefer a cheaper option? Look for the regional FL1 train, which costs less but doesn’t go directly to Termini—you’ll need to transfer.
    • Taxis are also available, with a fixed fare of around €50 into the city (official white taxis only!).
    • If you’re carrying a lot of luggage or landing late, booking a private shuttle online might be your most comfortable bet.

    From Ciampino Airport (CIA):
    • Ciampino is smaller and mostly used by low-cost airlines like Ryanair.
    • There’s no direct train into the city, but several shuttle buses (Terravision, SitBus, and others) connect the airport to Termini Station in about 40 minutes. Tickets are super affordable—around €5–6.
    • Taxis to the center have a fixed price of around €31 (again, always check it’s an official licensed taxi).
    • Tip: Always keep an eye out for official taxis (white, with a taxi sign on top and a license number) and avoid drivers who approach you inside the airport terminals.

      • Popular areas to stay: Centro Storico (historic center), Trastevere, Monti, and Prati.

      • Hotels around Termini Station are practical for short stays but research carefully (some areas are a little rough).

      • Consider booking refundable rates if you’re planning far ahead.

    Getting around the Eternal City is easier than you might think when you plan your Rome trip right. From buses to scooters, we’ve got you covered.

      • Rome’s Metro is simple but doesn’t cover all sights. Walking is often the fastest (and most scenic) way!

      • Buy a Roma Pass or a BIT ticket for public transport savings.

      • Taxis are easy to find but always insist on the meter being used.
